THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
A Cult Classic starring Lon ChaneyMasterworks of the Horror Cinema
Gaston Leroux' superb novel of a hideously scarred musician transfers to the silver screen as a visual treat. Lon Chaney plays Erick, the Phantom, who lives in the cellars beneath a Paris Opera House pursuing his goal of turning pretty Christine (Mary Philbin), a chorus girl into a Diva. Filled with memorable scenes, the Masked Ball, the journey through the Catacombs and the unmasking of the phantom, this remains the most memorable and horrific version to date. Chaney fell out with the director Julian
during the shooting and was replaced by Edward Sedgwick although Chaney himself directed some scenes.
